RIPPING APART THE MASK OF AN ILUKO LITERAY ICON by PETER LA. J*l**n
-Umuna a Paset-
There is an on-going “war” in the internet involving Iluko writers-- dagiti agdadamo, the not-so-young, and the so-called bangolan—that has kept the Ilocano websites like dadapilan.com and Il*ko.com alive for some time. It could have stemmed from one cause: the controversial article, “Ket Napankami met Nakitimpuyog, Atanud! “ Written by prize-winning author Errol L. Abr*w of Caba, La Union, the feature article, published in the Bannawag last year, was based on the international literary convention held at Camp Samal, Tumauini, Isabela last October.
The visible protagonists—those who don’t hide their identities-- include this writer, Abr*w, the editor of Regional Diaryo; Djuna Alcantara, president of Gunglo dagiti Mannurat iti La Union; Julio B*lm*s, an Abra writer now based in Dubai, and their sympathizers, on the one hand, and an Ilocano writers’ group based in Metro Manila, who hide under aliases like Mama Anawa and Ilocano Siwawer. A visitor of dadapilan.com has identified Ric Agnes, a Bannawag columnist, and a member of Gumil-Oahu (Hawaii) as one of those “nagabungot” who have been throwing brickbats at us. His visible nemesis, it appears, is Linda Bulong, one of the few Ilocana writers, of the University of the Philippines in Diliman.
A supposedly respected Iluko literary icon, Reynaldo D*que, Palanca Hall of Famer, has joined the fray. He could be one of those cowards who hide under false names in the websites. This time, he came out open via the print medium—in Bannawag, the Iluko weekly magazine. Rey has maligned us—he did not identify us by our names but it was clear it was us he was hitting—in his article, “Ti Dalan nga Agpa-Kalimugtong” that appeared in the Feb. 9, 2009 issue of the magazine.
D*que’s article could be described as self-pontificating, narcissistic, and smacks of dishonesty that is unexpected of a writer of his caliber. His digression, in the category of dialogic utterance in literary criticism, has nothing to do with his subject matter—his struggles as a creative writer. But he had to do what he was bidden to do: hit us with his kind of ammos from his literary arsenal that only produced a dud and, unfortunately for him, exposed his true self. Yes, D*que, in his article revealed the kind of person that he really is. Based on his own article, we can conclude that D*que is after all a rascal, a corrupt person. He is also a coward because he could not identify me by name as the subject of his unjustified wrath.
A person is not credible to deliver a sermon on morality, as D*que did, when his intellectual-moral acumen is under question. Why, Rey, saanmo pay a mapaggiidiat dagiti balikas nga etika ken etiketa? Are you talking about etiquette (say, table manners) or about ethics, a system of principles that should govern people like writers and journalists?
Abr*w has written a letter in response to D*que’s diatribe. It was sent to Bannawag, but the editor, Cles R*mb**d, would not print it. Abr*w, an activist during the Marcos years, has e-mailed us his Letter to the Editor (Bannawag). We are reproducing it in this column. (Ti sibubukel a surat ni Errol Abr*w, ipis-it ditoy)
Instead of presenting facts in his so-called “memoir”, Rey D*que went inside of himself and revealed his true self. Let us analyze a paragraph in his digression in “Ti Dalan nga Agpa-Kalimugtong”(Bannawag, Pebrero 9, 2009.) Ngem ania kadi ti pagrukodan ti kabaelan ti maysa a mannurat? Apay nga iti henerasion a nakaibilanganmi, natudingankami a kas “Eskolar ti Bannawag”? Gapu kadi ta nagbalinkami a paborito ti Bannawag no maidilig kadagiti dadduma?
Elsewhere in the salaysay, there is a subtitle: Eskolar ti Bannawag. In the article, D*que was using the “we” editorial pronoun—“we” is used in editorials to indicate that the writer is speaking for the editorial staff even if he or she wrote the piece. As used by D*que, “we “ is “I” ( siak).
D*que? Eskolar ti Bannawag? No dina imbaga, diak ammo. He is now making that claim himself 40 years or so after his group, except perhaps Gunding who was gainfully employed then, and our group made Bannawag a major source of income through writing. Bannawag scholar? Who designated him so? Manong Tante Casabar? He is now dead. Tatang David Campanano? He is now dead. Manong Johnny Alegre? He died last year. Only the surviving Bannawag staffer at that time, Juan S.P. Hidalgo, Jr., can testify.
But, of course, JSPH will dismiss this claim as the product of D*que’s deluded and narcissistic mind.
By making this dubious claim, D*que (note also paborito ti Bannawag and nabugas a gapuanan) was also saying that we, including JSPH, were of lesser minds. He also insulted his drinking buddies at that time —Eddie Angco, Manny Diaz, Gunding La. Foronda, Narding Belen, Arsing Cortez ( Arsing, pudno kadi a nagpukaw ti $1,000 nga indonarmo iti Gumil House?)
Yes, the mind of D*que was superior to the combined minds of our group that rented in the 1960s a rundown house, not an apartment, along Corominas Street in Quiapo, Manila—Lorenzo and Herman Tabin, Prescy Bermudez, PLJ, Terry Tugade, Tante Domingo, Ben Chua and Jimmy Lozano.
Winning 105 medals and becoming a Palanca Hall of Famer are achievements that installed D*que in the pantheon of not only Ilocano but Filipino literary heroes. I admire and congratulate him for these feats that, unfortunately, must have given him the franchise to malign us in his article.
He quoted Shakespeare in his anagram but, ironically, Shakespeare slashed him in the face for D*que’s “Ti Dalan nga agpa-Kalimugtong” narrates volumes of his cockiness and arrogance. He was writing about humility as one writer’s supposed trait. And yet he was angrily berating us—PLJ, Franklin M*c*g*y, Errol L. Abr*w-- for filing a complaint before Bannawag management. He did not investigate the cause of the complaint; instead, he came out with guns blazing like mad. Awan giddiatna iti ukom a nangibaba iti sentensiami: Awan karbenganyo nga agbalin a mannurat. He did not try to understand the context of “palipit”. In defending Cles R*mb**d, the associate editor of Bannawag, and his selective policy, he was self-pontificating. Has D*que lost his balance, or rhetorical skill, if he has any?
Let me digress, not in the manner that D*que did with his dialogic utterance that had nothing to do with his “memoir”. This is relevant to the discourse.
We as writers are supposed to be civilized, cultured and honest, not given to corruption. Why did we savage the funds for the construction of our memory in Suso? The abandoned patta speaks to us in the silence of the rusting iron bars and the deteriorating concrete and stones. Why did we betray our ideals and the old man, “Ti Tan-ok ti Kailokuan”, now wheel-chair bound, and the wife who welcomed us with open arms, year after year, with food and shelter in lit saluyot’s sacred ground by the sea? In her sorrow, our great mother, the first president of the University of Northern Philippines, said, “Bulok ti gunglo, Peter.”
Inyetnag ni Dra. Dedicacion Agatep-Reyes, 84, ti pangngeddengna iti pasado alas dies ti bigat ti Sabado itay Pebrero 28. Naggapuak idi idiay Laoag ket dimmagasak iti pagtaengan dagiti ag-Reyes idiay Suso iti panagturongko idiay Baguio tapno agatendarak ti Panagbenga 2009 idiay Burnham Park.
The brilliant lady—she clashed several times with Carmeling Crisologo over policies at UNP-- was then wearing an elegant silk black dress with flowers and the devastating beauty of the young years was still evident despite the lines creasing her lovely face. Apo Godo, 91, ravaged by three strokes, was on her side. (Asked who his visitor was, he, without batting an eyelash, pronounced my name clearly and distinctly. I was close to tears because the authentic Iluko literary icon, Pedro Bucaneg incarnate, the very humble man of many talents remembered me and called me by my name.)
Now, Rey, you wrote about loyalty to an organization I left in 2005. Can you synthesize the unstated message of Elbert Hubbard’s poem with respect to Gumil Filipinas? Can you challenge the judgment on the gunglo promulgated by one of Ilocandia’s most revered educators?
